כָּל־רֹדְפֶיהָ הִשִּׂיגוּהָ בֵּין הַמְּצָרִים: - איכה פרק א פסוק ג
We are now in the midst of a time in the Jewish calendar called “Ben Hameitzarim”.
Traditionally, this passage from the book of Eicha was used to demonstrate the susceptibility we as Jews are prone to in these three weeks.
The 17th of Tamuz is the day that we commemorate the beginning-of-the-end of the siege of Jerusalem, which culminated in the destruction of the temple and the fall of the Upper City 1950 years ago.
The 9th of Av is the day that the Holy Temple was set ablaze.
I was very pleasantly surprised to hear that the Ba’alei Hasod read this passuk quite differently.
They taught that these three weeks are actually a time of huge opportunity and possibility.
The reason for their insight is even more intriguing.
The 17th of Tamuz was also the day that the Holy Tablets of the Ten Commandments were supposed to be received.
The 9th of Av is also the day that our forefathers were due to enter the Holy Land.
This demonstrates and explains one of the core teachings of the Jewish tradition. That in a place of great darkness always lies an equal amount of light.
They read the passage as such “those that pursue (their deficiencies) will overcome them (in the time of) Ben Hameitzarim."
We have chosen to start three initiatives in these three weeks and launch just after Tisha b’Av.
